So, you just bought a new car and were told that this vehicle only requires minimal maintenance. Wow…just think, no expenses besides the loan payment, gas and insurance.
Of course, everyone knows that you will need to change the oil regularly, (or when you think about it, or when it starts making funny noises). So you do your due-diligence and go to your favorite oil change place for a “service”. The owner’s handbook says the oil should be changed every 10,000 miles, but…oops, you forgot and now you have gone 15,000 miles without an oil change.
Oh well, shouldn’t hurt the car right? Aren’t they built to take a little neglect? The short answer is yes; new cars are built much better than their predecessors. The long answer is; after 10 years and 100,000 miles all those little “neglected services” begin to add up. They can and will become very big repair bills.
The auto manufacturers have stretched the service intervals out to the max as a way to convince buyers that their cars are “cheap-to-keep”. It’s really just clever marketing. They don’t want you to keep your car for 10 years. They want to sell you a new one every 3 or 4 years so regular maintenance becomes less important.
I’m not knocking the Quickie Lube shops. They are definitely providing a service…but are they doing enough? Are they doing a complete safety and maintenance inspection? Do they inspect the tires, brakes, exhaust system, suspension, belts, battery and lights? Do they alert you about pending problems like oil leaks, coolant leaks or a nail in the tire? Do they test drive your car to listen for any abnormal noises, feel unusual vibrations or a steering pull?
